The default is new_mail.wav and it does sound a bit like the Windows exclamation. The sounds are in C:\Program Files (x86)\eM Client\Sound. Not sure why you have a different sound to what should be there. The difference with POP3 is that it stores the emails on your computer, therefore you can have the option to delete them from the server after downloading. IMAP basically stores all the emails on the server, with a copy on your computer. The settings you refer to are only for POP3. Your account is either setup as IMAP or POP3.
